There are many types of incidents to which firefighters can be called to, in fact, it would be impossible to list them all here. However, they may include
In addition to the core activity of responding to incidents, the role of a firefighter includes delivering fire safety advice to the local community. This is mainly achieved by visiting peoples homes, fitting smoke alarms and giving advice; visiting schools, and visiting other local groups. The fire and rescue service is legally bound to obtain intelligence regarding the risks in it's area. Firefighters will visit peoples workplaces and high-risk premises in their area to familiarise themselves with buildings and risks, and pre-plan in case of a fire occurring. Firefighters also attend local fetes and public events, to offer general advice about fire safety, recruitment and also to display the various types of equipment used. When "off duty," firefighters take part in many charity events. Look at any fire station notice board and you are very likely to see at least one charity poster. Some of the charities that Tenbury firefighters have supported include the Fire Fighters Charity, the NSPCC; Age Concern, local schools; and the local hospital league of friends. The very nature of the job leads to a very closely knit team; saving lives, improving safety and out meeting the community. The job can be physically and emotionally demanding, but it always delivers a great deal of pride and satisfaction. |
