Firefighters at Tenbury Wells work on the retained duty system.  Retained firefighters are 'on call' and respond to the fire station from home or their place of work when alerted by a pager to attend emergency calls.

If you are interested in becoming a retained (or "on-call") firefighter, You must be at least 18 years of age, be physically fit, and be within 6 minutes of the fire station to attend firecalls during your hours of availability.  You must also be available for two (possibly three) hours training per week (Mondays 7-9pm), additional training courses when required and be available to undertake local community safety work.

Firefighter Pay (from 1st July 2009):

*120-168 hours cover per week

 

Pay Explained:  A competent firefighter, giving full cover, receives £2820.83 per year for being on-call and available (the retaining fee).  A firefighter giving part cover will receive 75% of the retaining fee.

 

For attending a 1 hour fire call, they will receive £12.88 + disturbance fee of £3.70 = £16.58.  For a 2 hour fire call, they will receive (2 x £12.88) + disturbance fee = £29.46 and so on. This is known as a "Turnout" payment.

 

If a firefighter responds to the fire station to attend a fire call, but is not required to form part of the crew (eg, enough firefighter's arrived and they were surplus) the firefighter will receive a disturbance fee and 30 minutes pay. This is known as an "Attendance" payment.

 

Payment for training is at hourly rate.

 

Competency is normally achieved in approximately 3 years.
